What is a Home? A place to feel like you belong, nurture oneself and create a sense of security and love. Once this is all gone; what’s left – Nothing at all.
Most of us recall our home as Home Sweet Home but unfortunately not everyone around the world has got this liberty to call a place their home, their comfort and their freedom.
What causes Homelessness today? Below are the causes and reasons which lead to serious homeless issues around the world.
- Lack of affordable housing – When there aren’t enough affordable houses there is more likely that people may not have enough options to accommodate themselves.
- Unemployment – Lack of reliable income can make it difficult to pay for food, housing, education etc.
- Poverty – Economic inequality and lack of job opportunities can make it extremely difficult to maintain a home.
- Drug Abuse – Addiction however of any kind can lead to numerous problems, homelessness being the number one of many to come.
- Domestic Abuse – Survivors of domestic violence may turn to homeless services to find a secure place to stay.
Now the question arises why there are so many people homeless around the world and what we can do to create awareness.
For this particular reason there is a month for Hunger and Homelessness awareness which allows the people around the world to have a better understanding and awareness about it.
November is national homelessness awareness month and national homeless youth awareness month. SAMHSA works in partnership with federal state and local partners and national experts to provide training on housing treatment and recovery models focused on adults children and families who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have serious mental illness or serious emotional disturbance and substance use. These partnerships contribute to numerous housing schemes, emotional help and ending homelessness.
SAMHSA also supports the field through technical assistance to States and localities, treatment systems and individual providers on these issues.
Furthermore, there are many other organizations that helps people experiencing homelessness and make their lives better with providing basic facilities such as a home where they can feel a sense of belonging and love and comfort.
